Tsiknopempti is a traditional Greek and Cypriot cultural celebration which translates to “smokeyThursday” that takes place annually during the Carnival period, on the Thursday before the beginning of Lent. The name comes from the word “tsikna”, referring to the aroma of grilled meat, which is central to the celebration. Tsiknopempti is widely observed in Greece and Cyprus and holds strong cultural, social, and communal significance, particularly for Greek and Cypriot communities abroad, as it helps preserve cultural identity and shared traditions.
The celebration traditionally involves outdoor barbecuing, communal meals, music, and social interaction. It emphasizes togetherness, hospitality, and cultural expression rather than religious observance. For many students, especially those living away from their home countries, Tsiknopempti serves as an important opportunity to connect with their heritage, build community, and share their culture with others.
