Democracy is at the heart of everything we do at the Union—but let’s be honest, it hasn’t been working as it should for a while. Right now, Union representation isn’t fully reflective of the wonderfully diverse Brunel community, and that’s not okay. We’re failing to fully be your voice.
That’s why we’re calling this Emergency General Meeting—to make real, radical changes. The Voice Team has been working hard, listening to your feedback. You've told us what’s not working, what you care about, and what needs to change. We’ve taken that feedback and built a new plan—an updated representation structure designed to truly reflect you.
By attending the Emergency General Meeting and voting on this motion, you’ll help shape a Union that’s more inclusive, accountable, and effective—one that works for everyone. We can’t make this change happen without your input and your vote.
Plus, when you attend, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Gift Pay gift card or one of two £50 runner-up prizes—just in time for the holidays!
Here’s What You Said You Wanted:
- Representation that reflects Brunel’s diversity
- More ways to get involved that fit into a busy schedule
- A focus on issues that matter to you and ensure equal opportunities
- Competent officers who are held accountable
- More paid opportunities beyond Full-Time Officer roles
We’ve listened to your feedback and created a plan to address these needs. The proposed changes are designed to give you more access to representation, more paid opportunities, and a Union that better reflects the diverse student body.
Here’s what we’re recommending
- Collaborative Leadership: Strengthen cooperation between Full-Time Officers, Paid Part-Time Organisers, and volunteer roles to ensure all voices are represented.
- Inclusivity in Officer Roles: Open Full-Time Officer roles to all students, regardless of their college.
- Developed Student Networks: Expand and grow existing Student Networks, offering more flexible ways to engage without heavy time commitments.
- Paid Part-Time Roles: Introduce paid roles beyond Full-Time Officers to ensure students’ time and contributions are valued.
- Updated Election Process: Elect Full-Time Officers via a democratic vote, while all other roles will be selected through an application process to ensure your representatives are skilled, accountable, and truly reflect the needs of the student body.
At the Emergency General Meeting, we’re asking for your approval on a crucial motion to transform Union representation:
- Motion to Change the Officer Structure
This motion would result in constitutional changes.
